The North Pole has been reached by many people in many ways this century -- by dog team, skidoo, submarine, ice-breaking ship, and even by motorcycle -- not to count the various type sof aircraft that have touched down at 90 degrees North. But to contemplate travelling across the drifiting ice on foot, hauling sledges loaded with enough food, fuel and equipment to sustain life for a hundred days, requires men with a rare strain of polar madness running through their veins.
The Devil's Labyrinth is a compelling blend of polar history and the story of just such a trip undertaken by the author with David Mitchell and Dr. Steve Martin. It was a unique attempt to struggle against the strong southerly drift just north of Henrietta island off northern Siberia, then get on to the trans-polar drift stream and use it to reach the Pole. Contending with unseasonal and cripplingly cold temperatures, plus the debilitating pain of frostbite and young thin ice cracking up all around them they knew that the slightest error of judgement would probably kill them. But there was always the intoxicating wildness and beauty of it all, the thrill of the challenge and their own indomitable wills to keep them going.
