The Amazonian rain forest has become an internationally recognized symbol of the struggle between the forces of violence and destruction, acting in the name of progress, and the forces of tradition, acting to preserve a way of life and an irreplaceable resource. At the center of this struggle was Chico Mendes, the rubber tapper and union organizer who did more than any other individual to alert the world to the rape of the rain forest. Brutally murdered in 1988, he has become synonymous with the plight of the Amazonian people and the extraordinary world they inhabit.
INTO THE AMAZON is the revealing story of the people who live in the forest: the rubber tappers, river people, small landholders and natives. Augusta Dwyer not only spoke to them, she lived among them, sharing their meals and their way of life. In addition, she was one of the few journalists to become close friends with Chico Mendes, interviewing him on a number of occasions, the last time shortly before his death. Her account of the struggle of the people of the rain forest for survival and dignity against terrible odds is at once wonderfully evocative and deeply disturbing.
What emerges from Augusta Dwyer's account is more than the dissection of a topical issue; it is a committed and sensitive portrait of a region in turmoil. The outcome of the struggle in the Amazonian rain forest has consequences for us all.
