The Chinese Shar Pei, one of the most distinctive of all dog breeds, can be traced back to its homeland in China, where it was originally bred as a fighting dog. Loose folds of skin, the outstanding characteristic of the breed, were developed so that the Shar Pei would be impossible to pin down in a dog fight. Despite its impressive looks and loyal temperament, the Shar Pei fell from favor and came close to extinction. Fortunately, the breed was revived and foundation stock was established in the United States, which has now become the adopted home of the Shar Pei. Thanks to careful breeding and selection, the Shar Pei is now well established in the Western world and has become a familiar sight worldwide.

This highly comprehensive book includes an extensive history of the Shar Pei from its Chinese origins to present-day status. Expert advice is given on selecting and training a puppy, caring for the adult dog, the Shar Pei in the show ring, as well as detailed information on breeding and health problems.
