Cuba is the setting of this exceptionally fine suspense novel. Normal Lewis, and expert on the country and a master in depicting action cum atmosphere, presents his nightmare tale with complete authority. The plot hinges on the necessity of finding the perfect place for a full-scale surprise invasion of Cube. Although a location ahs been clearly pinpointed on the map and photographed by aerial reconnaissance, it still requires investigation by human eyes. Charles Fane, an Englishman with a mottled past, seems predestined for the job. From London he is sent to Canada, from Toronto via Mexico City to Havana, on what he believes to be a one-time, fairly simple assignment. But the simplicity is deceptive. Cuba reveals itself as a sinister place under tropical trappings. The twisted minds of power-crazy fanatics who plot in murky secrecy create an oppressive climate of bungling and double-dealing. Fane's way of accomplishing his mission is not what he bargained for.
