Contents: Carter Dickson is a pseudonym of prolific mystery author John Dickson Carr. His specialty, under both names, was the locked room mystery, but his primary protagonist in the Carter Dickson mysteries, Sir Henry Merrivale, adds a comic touch to the narrative.

From the jacket:

From the first shocking notes of Sir Henry's booming basso to the last echoes (which are best left undescribed), here is a rare experience for the locked room enthusiast.

The "Old Man" said he was retired. But, as some thousands of his avid followers know, Sir Henry cannot resist the lure of an "impossible" crime. . . . Particularly when a really attractive female needs help!

The resulting chaos involves some of the most intriguing characters Carter Dickson has yet created. . . . The articulate U. S. Congressman from Pennsylvania's 23 1/2 district. . . . The luscious English blue-stocking whom he pursues. . . . And Lady Virginia Brace herself.

It's inspired detection, with the "Old Man" at his demoniac best.
