The Book On the Bookshelf, by Petroski, Henry. Alfred A. Knopf: New York, 1999. Edition: First thus. ISBN: 0375406492. Trade Paperback, 290 pages. Pictorial cover. Illustrated with black and white photos and line drawings. Includes Notes, Bibliography, and Index. NOTE: the ISBN on the back cover is 0965004552, which seems to have a bad check digit, and which does not match the ISBN on the copyright page.
Condition: Very good. The cover photo on this book is so realistic that it looks like this book is damaged, however all of the things that look like edge wear and corner crumples are actually from the books used for the cover picture. The single flaw to this book is a bump to the upper spine end which has rumpled the paper somewhat.
Contents: This is one of those books that I bought for me to read, since I love books and shelving is a perennial problem! It is a fascinating explanation, written by an engineer, of how the form of books, shelving, and even architecture grew and influenced each other over time. It really should have been called The Book and the Bookshelf. Whether you like books, libraries, or just an engrossing history of one of the most ubiquitous and useful objects ever designed by man, you'll enjoy losing yourself in this well-designed book.
