Picture of A Short History of the Far East A Short History of the Far East, by Latourette, Kenneth Scott. MacMillan: New York, 1947. Edition: Reprint. Hardcover, 665 pages. Blue-green cloth with gilt lettering on cover and spine. Includes maps and an Index. Bibliography at the end of most chapters.

Condition: Good Plus. Spine ends and corners are bumped, and cover is lightly soiled. End papers contain pencil notations, probably class notes, and a former owner's name and address, in ink, graces the first free end paper. Page edges are darkened from age. There are no notes, underlinings, or highlights on the interior pages, all of which are clean and tight..

Contents: Primarily a history of India, China, Japan, and the "lesser lands", including Tibet, Mongolia, Korea, Burma, and the Philippines. The book was copyrighted as of 1946 and this second reprint was done in June of 1947. This means the author's history ends just at the end of World War II, when the United States had just defeated Japan and also just before India received its independence from British rule. I always find it fascinating to read books contemporaneous with major world events, if for no other reason than to see if the author's opinions and vision held up to the changes that followed publication.
