The Lost Word: A Christmas Legend of Long Ago, by Van Dyke, Henry. Charles Scribner's Sons: New York, 1898. Edition: First edition. Hardcover, 6 by 8.5 inches, 71 pages. Green cloth with cover decorated in gilt and black. Top page edges gilt, other edges deckle. Title page title and author's name in red, pordered in grape vine decoration, all other pages bordered in flower, vine and fish decoration. Illustrated with four photogravures from original drawings by Corwin Knapp Linson, all still with original tissue guards. Caption printed in light red on the tissue guard.
Condition: Fair. Ex Library copy. First free end paper contains a gift inscription: Marie Helen Scofield / with Xmas best wishes / from / Papa / Xmas 1898. Cover is sun-faded on spine and upper front and is bumped on all corners, with approximately 1/2 inch of the spine missing at the top.Tissue in front of of the plate facing page 44 has a tear approximately 2 inches deep by 1/4 inch wide at the top of the page near the gutter. Library markings consist of the following: Dedication page includes the date (Nov. 1958) and a five digit number at the top, with the notation "gift" near the gutter. Page 3, Page 51, and Page 71 contain a library ownership stamp in purple. Rear inside cover contains abrasions where card pocket was removed, and last free end paper has a large tear approximately 5 X 1 inches where the due date slip was removed.
Contents: Henry van Dyke (1852 - 1933) was an American author, educator, and clergyman. He graduated from Princeton University, 1873, and from Princeton Theological Seminary, 1874 and served as a professor of English literature at Princeton between 1899 and 1923. In 1908-09, Dr. Van Dyke was American lecturer at the University of Paris. By appointment of President Wilson he became Minister to the Netherlands and Luxemburg in 1913. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and received many other honors. This long-ago tale of Christmas and the healing power of divine knowledge is a religiously oriented story. It was reprinted several times, the latest in 2004, but this is a first edition.
