Picture of Practical Light Horse Breeding Practical Light Horse Breeding, by Wall, John F.. John F. Wall: Lexington, Kentucky, 1936. Edition: Third edition. Hardcover, 5.75 by 8 inches, 146 pages. Foreword by E.R. Bradley of Idle Hour Farm. Maroon leatherette cover with gilt letterig on cover and spine. Illustrated with black and white photos throughout. The covers of this book are actually a little flexible, heavier than an ordinary paperback cover and lighter than the standard hardcover boards.

Condition: Good, no jacket. Some bumping to the spine ends and corners; one leaf (page 133/134) was damaged, and a page from the same edition has been carefully tipped in to replace it.

Contents: The first edition of this book was made up of articles which appeared serially in the BLOOD HORSE from may 31 to August 23, 1930. The second edition was revised to add an appendix and an index. In this, the third edition, some material has been eliminated and new material added, primarily on breeding hygene and the then new practice of testing mares for infection before shipping them to be bred. Material was also added to assist breeders attempting to raise horses on deficient soils.

Subjects covered include: Personnel; Buildings; Paddocks, Soil and Grass; Stallion Selection, Care and Handling; Broodmare Selection, Care and Handling; The Foal Care and Handling; Parasites; and Acquisition of a Thoroughbred Farm.

One rather interesting technique use by the author is to give examples how how several different farms handle the same situation. For example, in the chapter on Stallions, the author goes through seven different farms and explains how they feed their stallions when they are breeding and when the season is over, and also how much and what kind of exercise they give. The final chapter goes into some detail on the routine procedures and general care of one Thoroughbred farm.
