Contents: Part of the Humanistic Scholarship in America -- The Princeton Studies series. From the foreword:

Art history and archaeology...are new among the humanistic disciplines in America and they still speak with something of the foreign accent of the recent immigrant. The task here is not so much to recount the history of past achievements as to consider the critical problems of method confronting the American scholar in disciplines which have only recently been transplanted to our academic groves.

Professor Ackerman and Professor Carpenter are the ideal authors for the purpose -- they are scholars of the highest repute and attainments, they are known for their interest in method, and neither is timid in proposing novel theories for their colleagues to shoot at. This is the stuff of which lively scholarship is made and I am grateful to the two of them for avoiding the platitudes and uninspired dullness which is the besetting sin of so many "projects." Our aim is to stimulate critical discussion about the humanities in America, not to bury them. This volume achieves our aim with brilliance and learning.
