A tour de force of oral journalism. What Cops Know is the first collection of policy war stories and observations to reveal what all the cop books and cop shows have been hinting at for years: what cops, by virtue of their street experience and criminal expertise, have learned about crime, criminals, and human nature.

Chicago crime specialist Connie Fletcher...interviewed the men and women of the Chicago Police Department's Area Six....What cops told Fletcher is given straight in chapters on the Street, Violent Crimes, Property Crimes, Sex Crimes, Narcotics, and Organized Crime.

What Cops Know may just be the finest book on police work ever published. When one is through reading it, one understands what it's like to ba cop -- how fascinating, how discouraging, how addictive, and how terrifying is the work of a policy officer. -- Father Andrew Greeley
