From the jacket

The vicious deeds of the four sons of Ragnar Lothbrok were known throughout Europe. Wherever their ships had sailed – England, Ireland, France, Spain – they had slashed a merciless corridor of death. They were unquestionably the greatest and greediest seafarers in the world, and it was only a matter of time before they would strike again.

Along the northeast coast of East Anglia, lookouts were posted day and night. The kingdom could ill afford to be caught off guard. Eighteen years earlier, the Vikings had swept through the countryside, killing every man who stood in their way . . . and bedding every woman.

Although his stepfather was a noble thane and his father was a powerful jarl, Shef lived in abject poverty. But he was not alone. Most of England was experiencing hard times, made harder by the Church’s stagnating stranglehold on the kings.

When the Norse raiders finally returned to East Anglia, Shef, having nothing to lose, joined them. At the time, the Viking Great Army was split between the Ragnarsson camp and the followers of the Way. Unlike the other Norsemen, the Waymen frowned upon brutality and dedicated their lives to seeking knowledge from the Norse gods.

Under the tutelage of Thorvin, a hammer-wielding Thor-priest, Shef began to experience prophetic dreams. In them, Othin -- the God of the Hanged, the Betrayer of Warriors -- provided him with the military expertise he needed to emancipate England from the Church.

He would have to build an arsenal the likes of which no mortal had ever seen. He would have to garner the support of slaves as well as kings. He would have to beat the sons of Ragnar at their own deadly game.

Yes, the Hammer could defeat the Cross, but it would take a struggle of biblical proportions.
