[Montgomery's] authoritative study includes a discussion of methods of manufacture, shop practices, apprenticeship, the pewterers' craft as it broke away from traditional English forms, the fascinating topic of pewterers' *touches* or trademarks, and for the collector, connoisseurship. A section on American marks provides a valuable reference for the collector and student alike, as does an analysis of the composition of pewter objects, which represents a recent advance in research that has never before been published. The illustrations are largely drawn from The Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum collection of American pewter, the foremost public collection in America, but many other pieces are included so that the coverage of every key form is complete.
