History of the United States fom Aboriginal Times to Taft's Administration Volume II, III, and IV, by Ridpath, John Clark A.M., LL.D.. The Review of Reviews Company: New York, 1911. Edition: Revised 1911 edition. Hardcover, 12mo, 5 by 7 inches, pages. Title continues: : Academic Edition Revised 1911 by The Review of Reviews Illustrated. Half bound in leather over marbled boards, top edges gilt. All volumes are illustrated with black and white line drawings, including some maps, in the text. See details below for maps and plates in each volume. Each volume has it's own index. Page numbers are continuous through the four volume set, so that Volume II is numbered i-vi and 219-443, Volume III i-vi and 449-681, and volume VI i-vi and 683-907. (Although there are gaps in the page numbers between volumes, no pages are missing.
Condition: Fair. (Fair is a worse condition than Good.) These books are well worn and all missing their spines; the front cover is detatched from Volume II. Interiors are complete and unmarked, with all plates present as issued.
Contents: Volume II includes two color plates: the frontispiece is a colored map showing the territorial growth of the United States; facing page 353, is a colored map showing the state territories at the close of the American Revolution. Maps in the text include Bunker Hill and Beston (one map) and Valley Forge, Philadelphia, and Brandywine (one map).
Volume III has two black and white plates: the frontispiece shows the Great Figures of the Civil War - Military Commanders, North and South; the plate facing page 655 shows President Lincoln and General McClellan, from a photograph taken just two weeks after the Battle of Antietam. Maps within the text are The Siege of Yorktown and The Mexican Campaign.
Volume IV has four plates: the frontispiece includes two maps of the United States, one marked for industries (wool products, tobacco, etc.) and the other showing the principle railroads as of 1911; facing page 683 is a color map showing Important Battlegrounds of the Civil War; facing page 769 is a black and white photograph of the capital building in Washington DC; facing page 859 is a color map of the Panama Canal; facing page 883 is a color map of Peary's Route to the North Pole. Four maps are included within the text: Battlefield of Gettysburg; Sherman's March to the Sea; The Center of Population; and the Percentage of Inrease in Population of Various States.
