Contents: Publisher's Note:

MAPS AND MAN chronicles the history of the map as an expression of man's scientific and cultural evolution. Beginning with the maps of the primitives, the author traces the chronological development of cartography and its interplay with history through antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and 19th century diversification to its most contemporary directions. He surveys American as well as European, and private as well as public mapping and takes a special look at the contributions of early Oriental cartography.

Seventy illustrations include reproductions of maps considered landmarks in the development of the art and the science of cartography. Some of these are frequently mentioned historical documents but rare in reproduction. All of them piece together the special alphabet shared by all men throughout history and more commonly used today than ever.

Professor Thrower shows that maps reveal as much about the people, the cultures, and the historical periods that produce them as they do about geography. He has written a book that, like its subject, is readable and fascinating to specialists and laymen alike.
