Contents: Publisher's Note:
In this fascinating and original look at the culture and civilization of ancient Egypt, Dr. Rosalie David explains how myth, magic and ritual controlled the lives of the people. She builds up an intriguing picture of the growth of the sun cult -- the development of the king as 'son of Re' (the sun god) in pre-dynastic Egypt, and the adoption of RE as the great royal god; the purpose, building and decoration of the great temple and pyramid complexes during the Old Kingdom, and their link with the king's afterlife; the 'Mansions of Ka' or tombs of the nobles, their funerary customs and the role of Re in connection with mummies; the rise of Amun to power in the 18th Dynasty, when Amun and Re became syncretized into Amen-Re, state-god and god of the people; and finally the religious revolution of Akhenaten, the sun-god as the one and only god, symbolized by the Aten or sun's disc.
Illustrated with plans of the pyramids and temples, and drawings and photographs of mural paintings, mummies, statues and other objects found in the tombs, CULTOF THE SUN will be of great general interest, as well as providing valuable new insights for historians, Egyptologists and archaeologists.
