In THE LEFT HAND OF GOD, Rabbi Michael Lerner offers hope and healing to dispirited Democrats who, following defeats in 2000 and 2004, may be looking for direction. Lerner explains why the political right and the religious right were able to join forces in the recent past and prevail. Yet he sees that ultimately this alliance was based on authoritarianism or force, which he terms the "Right Hand of God," and offers a "spiritual, but not religious" alternative, based on the "Left Hand of God," which in his view, is based on love. Using this distinction, Lerner offers a very specific blueprint for the future, which he calls "The Spiritual Covenant with America." It is derived from "spiritual, but not religious" values, and addresses issues of family, responsibility, and community. The goal is a society that truly supports family values, and which is, as a result, a stronger, more secure nation. Such a nation, says Lerner, will follow a "generous foreign policy"--politically, economically, and ecologically.
