The Horseman's Encyclopedia: New and Revised Edition, by Self, Margaret Cabell. Arco: New York, 1974. Edition: Later printing. ISBN: 0668027770. Hardcover, 8vo, 7 by 9.5 inches, 428 pages. Blue cloth with silver lettering on spine. Illustrated with black and white photographs and line drawings. Includes Bibliography and Index.
Condition: Very Good in a Fair jacket. Spine ends bumped, page edges a little grayed from shelf dust. Ink is smudged on one page, affecting two lines of type, probably a manufacturing defect. Jacket is rubbed, chipped at spine ends, and has a large abrasion on front where a price sticker was removed.
Contents: An extensive list of horse terms with definitions and explanations, arranged in alphabetical order. Includes terms from all the major disciplines, including racing, hunting and jumping, cowhorses, and others. It begins with ACCIDENTS (cross referenced to RUNAWAYS; FALLS; CAST HORSE; and BOLTING) and ends with ZERAPE (ha! Bet you were thinking ZEBRA! -- that's second-last.) and everything in between. An excellent resource for the horse person familiar with one discipline who would like a quick reference to equine subjects they may not have personally encountered.
