In 1950 a magazine conducted a poll to determine the greatest pacer of the first half of the 20th century. Eighty-three different horses were mentioned; but when the final count was in, one horse has nearly a 2-1 lead over his closest rival. His name was Single G, and this is his remarkable story.

It has been over half a century since his foaling, a quarter of a century since his passing; yet Single G's memory and his greatness have yet to be forgotten. For the story of the small bay colt who came pacing out of Cambridge City, Indiana, back in 1913, and who continued to set pacing records until his retirement in 1925 -- by which time the stallion was being matched against the grandchildren of the horses he had defeated at the beginning of this career -- is still one of the most amazing ever associated with the Standardbred sport.

Perhaps the most complete study ever written of a single horse, the author's exhaustive research has produced photographs, complete statistics of the Wonder Horse's important races, and newspaper accounts. Miss Hill has therefore been able to give sports fans -- and horselovers -- step-by-step accounts of all the important races Single G paced, including his record-breaking 1:58 1/2 at the age of thirteen, who his opponents were, the times of each quarter, the name of his driver, and amount of the purse.

You will also meet his owner, William Barefoot, his driver, Ed Allen, plus some of the greatest pacers of the ear of Grand Circuit Racing, betting rings, and three-heat, mile-long races. There was Napoleon Direct, Romola, Northern Direct, Verlie Patchen, Sir Roch -- and Margaret Dillon, "The White Faced Lady from, Boston," who gave Single G some of his greatest battles and was herself responsible for the shattering of many records.

Singe G's story is one of the most astounding in racing history. He has been immortalized in poems, by monuments, in paintings; and he has been elected to the Hall of Fame of the Trotter. In this book the Wonder Horse of the century lives again and races again for all of us.
