Contents: This is an set of books which will be of interest to both historians and genealogists. Volumes 1 and 2 comprise the history, while volumes 3 and 4 contain bibliographical material of prominent citizens. Since these are the men who built the city, the bibliographies necessarily include additional historical material.

The photographs in Volumes 1 and 2 are numerous and significant, many from the mid to later 1800's. They identify streets and buildings, usually giving both the original and current street name in the many cases where street names had been changed. In fact, there is an entire chapter on Old Milwaukee Streets which gives the history of many of the name changes. The author adds interest by making liberal use of contemporaneous documents, such as travelers' letters and newspaper articles. The history is not so much linear as by subject, with chapter XXII -- INDIANS AS NEIGHBORS following Chapter XXI -- A CENTER OF INDUSTRIES. There are chapters on bridges, pioneer wagon roads, the harbour and shipbuilding, the railways, early day merchants, immigrants, the old hotels, the anti-slavery movement, volunteer firement, soldiers, churches, doctors and lawyers, the press, how women helped, health and education, and some of the surrounding communities.

Volumes 3 and 4 are the biographies. Many of these are illustrated with engravings, and some with photographs.

This shows the bottom page edges. Note how the marbling on the right hand side of the books appears faded or worn off a bit. You can also see the wear to the corners.

This is the back cover of Volume 1. It has the most white scuff marks.
