Contents: From the Introduction:
In 1979, the City of Milwaukee, with funding assistance from the State Historical Society's Historic Preservation Division, initiated a comprehensive architectual survey of the city. The project's goal was to identify and document structures and sites of architectural and/or historical significance built prior to 1930. The survey, completed in 1980, was carried out by three architectural historians and was conducted on a street-by-street and building-by-building basis. A survey form, with accompanying photograph, was completed for each of the approximately 6600 sites.
This book was developed from the information captured in that survey. While it certainly does not catalog all of the structures covered by the survey, each portion of the city is represented with photographs of buildings, which are shown with their street addresses. Any resident or former resident will surely find buildings he can recognize in his own neighborhood.
The book shows structures representative of both architectural styles and of residents, both grand and ordinary. A wonderful book for anyone interested in Milwaukee history and the many architectural styles represented in the city.
