In 1882, when the paper was still in its infancy, the stark tragedy of a Milwaukee hotel fire in which eighty persons perished pointed up the need for a newspaper with the courage, knowledge, and determination to print the truth. The Journal demanded a full investigation and punishment for the guilty who had hidden from the public the deplorable condition of the hotel. From the time of this tragic drama to the present, The Journal has been in the midst of local, state, national, and international controversies, striving always to bring the people the truth.

This book recounts the first eight decades in the life of that Milwaukee institution, The Milwaukee Journal. It not only documents The Journal's editorial policy on both local and national matters that mattered to Wisconsonites, but it documents the contributions of the men and women -- editors, writers, reporters, printers, and others -- who were responsible for its success. In 1937, The Journal, recognizing that no outsider could possibly maintain the founder's vision for the paper, created an innovative stock plan that transferred stock ownership of the company to its employees, eventually giving the employees controlling interest. Nor does the book neglect the paper itself, giving the story behind such features as The Green Sheet, the weekend supplements, the first color printing. All in all, a fascinating look at the paper that not only delivered the news, but made history.
