Contents: This book presents a comprehensive catalog of Indianapolis buildings from the earliest days through the time of it's publication. It is arranged in two major sections.

The "guide portion" divides the city by neighborhoods, with the text material attempting to characterize the neighborhood while the captions provide the facts and sentiments about the individually located landmarks.

The "historical view" deals with the development of the physical environment beginning with the original decision of the placement of the capitol to the changes which are occurring today. What happened to cause the fashionable area to move north? Why does a "belt railroad" extend around ony three sides of the city? What are the future ramifications of a "belt highway" that continues around the entire city and will soon penetrate the downtown?

Also highly useful and intersting is a ten page chart which shows the chronological parallels among political events, econimic/social events, and land use & urban growth, with cross references to the representative architecture of the time.
