Official Map of the City of Milwaukee Baptist Young People's Union of America Sixth Annual Convention 1896 Presented with the compliments of The Estey Organ Co., The Esty Piano Co., by No author stated. , 1896. Softcover, 12 by 19 inches, 1 pages. A card map, folded to approximately 2 3/4 by 5 1/8 inches and encased in a tan cardboard tri-fold wallet. Map is in black and white with special features highlighted in red. Unfolded size is 12 inches wide by 19 inches tall. There is no scale printed on the map, but calculating from another map, the scale appears to be approximately 2100 feet per inch.

Condition: Very Good. Card wallet is lightly soiled, but except for the original fold lines, the map is in pristine condition. Any apparent discoloration on the scans is from shadows cast by the fold lines.

Contents: I am delighted to offer this incredible find to genealogists and Milwaukee historians. It shows all streets up to the city limits, and best of all, it was published before the extensive street renaming project that took place in the 1920's. This means that references to old addresses on streets that have since been renamed can be found on this map.

The map is an irregular shape, as was Milwaukee. Going around the map in a clockwise direction, the boundaries are as follows:

• On the east, Lake Michigan
• On the south, Oklahoma Ave. from the lake west to Howell
• Howell north to Russell Ave.
• Russell Ave. (renamed Cleveland Ave. in 1909) west to Washington Ave (Which is the same as 27th St if continued from the street numbering system north of Canal street. The street numbers at this time do not run straight through Canal from north to south, and Washington Ave. would be 22nd street on the south side in 1896.).
• Washington Ave. (27nd St) north to Canal.
• Canal west to Western Ave. (now 35th St.)
• Western Ave. (35th St.) North to Keefe Ave.
• Keefe Ave. east to the lake

The map includes the following features:

• An index of protestent denomination churches in red.
• All city streets named on the map.
• Major buildings such as city hall identified.
• City parks shown.
• Red dashed lines are shown along some streets. There is nothing in the legend to indicate their meaning, but it is likely that they represent public transportation of some kind.

All in all, this is a wonderful find for the Milwaukee genealogist or historian who is interested in seeing the city as their ancestors saw it.
