History of Milwaukee City and County (3 Volumes), by Bruce, William George (Editor). S.J. Clarke: Chicago, 1922. Edition: First edition. Hardcover, 4to, 7.5 by 10.25 inches, 804,831, and 893 pages. Green cloth with gilt lettering on spine. All edges marbled; end papers marbled; hinges reinforced with visible cloth joints, as issued. Illustrated with black and white photographs throughout. Each book contains its own index. Volume I includes a table of contents and list of illustrations.
Condition: Very Good, no jacket. Spine ends and corners a bit bumped and worn with occasional light scuff mark to cover. Volume III has three small dings to front edge of cover. Interior text pages are completely unmarked and secure in their bindings. A very solid set.
Contents: Volume I covers the history of Milwaukee. It was edited and partly written by William George Bruce (1856-1949), an author, publisher, and active civic leader for all of his adult life. In his Preface, Bruce indicates that a large part of the manuscript was prepared by J. Seymour Currey. Neither Bruce nor anyone else is given credit on the title pages of Volume II and III, which consist of biographical sketches of prominent Milwaukee citizens and companies.
Volume I is notable not only for the detail of information on the development of Milwaukee into a significant American city, but for the wonderful photographs of many of its commercial streets and landmark buildings. It's easy to understand why Bruce was so proud of the city of his birth.
Volumes II and III each contain hundreds of biographical sketches of businessmen, clergy, and community leaders. These biographical sketches include significant genealogical information, often including names and birthplaces of parents, siblings, spouses, and children in addition to details of the subjects life work, religion, and political affiliations.
View of upper spine ends, showing extent of the bumping. Marbled page edges can also be seen.
