Contents: This book was originally designed as a text for courses in horse production offered at the college level, and as such, is well researched and informative in the areas that would be necessary for a livestock breeder of horses to know. The author also envisioned it as a suitable reference for teachers of vocational agriculture and 4-H Club leaders. The book includes a section on how to judge livestock, and gives a synopsis of desired and undesirable characteristics of the most common draft and light breeds. It also covers feeding, stallion and brood mare management, foaling, equitation, shoeing and selling.

Although the author has been painstaking in assembling information on the various breeds, I have to say that his favorite seems to be the American Saddlebred, and the book abounds in pictures and examples of Saddlebreds used to illustrate the text where appropriate.

The book contains quite a bit of information on conformation and anatomy, with excellent illustrations.

Judging a horse's age by his teeth.

Foot and leg anatomy...

...and problems.

Tack...this page is harness equipment for trotters and pacers.

Stable design.

The author pictures many types of horses, but he seems partial to Saddlebreds and Hackneys. Just my opinion...
