An Illustrated History of The State of Wisconsin, by Tuttle, Charles R.. B.B. Russell: Boston, Mass., 1875. Edition: First edition. Hardcover, 6.5 by 9.25 inches, 800 pages. Title continues: Being a complete civil, political, and military history of the state, from its first exploration down to 1875; including a cyclopedia of legislation during the administration of each governor, from the organization of the territorial government down to governor Taylor; with historical and descriptive sketches of each county in the state separately, embracing interesting narratives of pioneer life; including an account of the commercial, agricultural, and educational growth of Wisconsin. Illustrated. Sold only by canvassing agents.
Half bound in leather over brown cloth; state seal in gilt on cover; title and decorative rules in gilt on spine. Color County and Township Map of Wisconsin, prepared expressly for Tuttle's History of Wisconsin tipped in. Frontispiece and engraved portraits. Front matter includes Table of Contents, Index of Counties, Index to Biographies of Women and Men, and Index to Portraits.
Condition: Poor. Leather is very worn and spine is quite chipped; Tipped-in map has a two-inch tear near the point where it is glued to the page. Front hinge is cracked and second signature is partially detatched (still secured near the top of the pages); there are a few detatched leaves elsewhere throughout the book. In general, entire binding is extremely relaxed. Light marginal pencil marks occur occasionally, most extensively in chapter XLVII, Wisconsin's Women. For the most part, these appear to be corrections of spelling errors, page number references and the like. Very small amount of dampstaining extending only a quarter inch or less into the margin on the corner of a few pages.
Contents: The book contains over 100 engraved portraits and more than 130 biographies of important early Wisconsonites, both male and -- unusual for the times -- female. The last 150 pages contain sketches of counties and the aforementioned biographies. The early chapters, covering the period prior to statehood, contain information on the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, and several chapters covering the territorial government. After statehood, most of the chapters move chronologically forward with one or more chapters devoted to each year. Over 200 pages are devoted to Wisconsin's Civil War history, including a great deal of information on regimental history.
