Picture of Wisconsin: Its History and Its People 1634-1924 (4 volumes) Wisconsin: Its History and Its People 1634-1924 (4 volumes), by Quaife, Milo Milton Ph.D.. S.J. Clarke: Chicago, 1924. Edition: First edition. Hardcover, 7.5 by 10.75 inches, Vol I, 608; Vol II, 599; Vol III 678; Vol IV, 682 pages. Green cloth with gilt lettering on spine. All edges marbled; end papers marbled; hinges reinforced with visible cloth joints, as issued. Volumes I and II (the histories) illustrated with black and white photographs; Volume II has a color flag of Wisconsin as frontispiece; Volumes III and IV (the biographies) are illustrated with photographs and engravings, the latter protected with tissue guards. Each volume is separately paginated and contains its own index. Volume I contains the Table of Contents for both itself and Volume II. Text of the histories is footnoted, with bibliographic notes at the end of each chapter.

Condition: Volumes I and II: Very Good; Volumes III and IV: Fine. No jacket as issued. In general, all spine ends are bumped; corners are bumped and in Volume I and II, they are worn. Volume I sustains slightly more damage than the others, with the upper spine a little frayed, a ding along the upper edge of the back board, and a one inch split starting on the back joint. In Volume II, pages 16 and 17 show evidence of having been stuck together for a width varying between 1/4 and 1/2 inch along their lower margin. There is no other evidence of water damage to any of the volumes, so whatever happened is local to these two pages. The title page of Volume II, across from the frontispiece, is foxed. There are a few small smudges and occasional light foxing scattered through the books, but other than as noted, each Volume is clean, unmarked, and firmly bound.

Contents: From the Preface::

The plan laid down for this work contemplated two voumes of history, of which the first volume, written wholly by myself, should trace the chronological evoution of Wisconsin from its beginning until the present day, while the contents of the second volume, written by a selected group of specialists in their several fields, should present a somewhat comprehensive view, particularly in the governmental field, of the dynamic present-day comonwealth, whose organization has undergone for all practical purposes, a sweeping revolution since the dawn of the twentieth century.

Since this book may well be desired for its value as a genealogical reference or for historical researches, I am providing PDF files of each index. Volume III and IV, the bibliographies, are not arranged in alphabetical order, and several prominent people are referenced in the historical volumes I and II, so all four indexes should be checked if a particular name is being searched: Volume I Index (371 KB), Volume II Index (1,734 KB), Volume III Index (277 KB), Volume IV Index (250 KB).
