In this vivid, detailed portrait of his home town, Robert Wells reveals the remarkable spirit that has built Milwaukee from a primitive, remote trading post to a thriving, modern industrial center. From its shakey beginnings in the uncertainties of underwater real estate to its flourishing and diversified modern economy, he traces the city's history in a series of absorbing, entertaining anecdotes which demonstrate why, Wells says, "Milwaukee is a place that grows on you gradually, like a beer belly."
