After his entire hometown turns against him for a crime he didn't commit, Jacob Travers runs away and joins a gang of bank robbers. But when a job goes bad and Travers is seriously wounded, he sees Emory Moore, the man he considers his only friend, turn tail and run, leaving him to die or be caught.
Disillusions but determined to survive, Travers crawls to the site of a deserted trading post in Ghost River -- a settlement he never knew existed -- and falls under the spell of a gentle soul named George. Recovered, repentant, and sworn to stay clean, he sets out to avoid the posse he knows must be chasing him.
Along the trail he suddenly finds himself in the unfamiliar role of hero, when he protects patent-medicine hawker Dr. Milburn Pritchard and his assistant, Miss Leanne Covington, from an angry mob. They ask him to accompany them to Dr. Pritchard's son's ranch, the UJ, and Travers agrees.
Before they even arrive, though, they get their first signs that all is not right at the UJ -- young Pritchard seems to be involved in a deadly ranch war with his neighbor and he has none other than Emory Moore riding protection for him. Travers at first wants to ride on out, but after witnessing a surprise attach by men from the other spread that leaves one man dead, he decided he must stay on to see justice done. Trouble is, it becomes mighty difficult to decide who deserves justice after a few days at the UJ...
