Redwood Country: The Lava Region and the Redwoods, by Powers, Alfred. Duell, Sloan & Pearce: New York, 1949. Edition: First Edition stated. Hardcover, 6 by 8.5 inches, 292 pages. American Folkways series. Red cloth with gilt lettering in black boxes on spine; black decoration on cover; end papers are maps; red publisher's stain on top page edges. Include index.
Condition: Good in a Poor jacket. Book is an ex-library copy with all of the usual flaws, including indexing notes, library stamp, due date slip and remnants of tape on the covers and end papers where the jacket was affixed. Back end paper has been damaged by the removal of tape and card pocket, but front end papers are the same map, and are completely legible. Jacket is poor because the inside flaps have been trimmed and narrowed. Back flap has lost about half its text do to this "trimming." Still, as a copy on the shelf, the jacket might be salvagable and presentable, since there is only a small library sticker on the spine which could be carefully removed. But if I were keeping this book, I might discard the jacket entirely, because it really has a beautiful spine, which has nothing to apologize for.
Contents: Publisher's Note:
Includes the portions of southern Oregon and northern California where the giant redwood trees grow, and the section along the border of the two states where the great lava deposits are found. [It] is the land of Crater Lake, Mount Lassen, and Joaquin Miller's hauntingly beautiful Mount Shasta. It was the home of the mercenary Indian tribe which minted its shells two hundred miles away so that the value of the currency would be maintained. It provided the landfall for the Chinese wanderer who discovered America many centuries before Columbus was born.
