Contents: The author, Bill Hooker, was born at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin in 1856 and moved with his parents to Milwaukee at the close of the Civil War. Hooker's first newspaper job was as a delivery boy, and although he held many jobs in his life, he always came back to the news and printing trades, as a printer, news gatherer, editor and author. He travelled widely, but always returned to his beloved home in Milwaukee, finally retiring there with the intention of staying until the end.
The little stories in this book were all originally published in the Milwaukee Journal, all written, as the author says, "...after I have passed the allotted time of man -- three score and ten." The are a memoir of sorts, not of an individual, but of a city, covering a wide variety of "...old time customs, forgotten politicians, the upbiulding of the city, etc."
All in all, a delightful read about things as they used to be.
