Contents: From the Introduction:
The book charts the history of Prairie du Chien from the very beginning, when, by virtue of discovering the mouth of the river in the 1500's, Spain claimed all the lands drained by the Mississippi and its tributaries. From that point, it was claimed over the years by the French, the British, and finally the Americans.Considered the first and most authoritative work on the early history of this important Wisconsin settlement. This is not simply a local history of one place in Wisconsin. Because of its commanding position on the Mississippi at the mouth of the Wisconsin, Prairie du Chien's history is involved in international relations.
